Southern Fried Salmon Patties are a classic comfort food that’s crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Made with canned salmon, seasonings, and a few simple ingredients, these patties come together quickly and are perfect for weeknight dinners. Serve them with a side of greens, cornbread, or your favorite sauce for a delicious Southern-inspired meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 can (14.75 oz) salmon, drained and flaked
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped green bell pepper (optional)
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (or crushed saltine crackers)
  • 1/4 cup cornmeal
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Salmon Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the flaked salmon, chopped onion, bell pepper, beaten egg, breadcrumbs, cornmeal, mayonnaise, lemon juice, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined. The mixture should hold together when shaped into patties; if it’s too dry, add a little more mayonnaise or a splash of milk.
  2. Form the Patties: Shape the mixture into small patties, about 2-3 inches in diameter. Place them on a plate and let rest for a few minutes to firm up.
  3. Heat the Oil: In a large skillet, heat about 1/4 inch of oil over medium heat until it shimmers.
  4. Fry the Patties: Carefully place the patties in the hot oil, cooking in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding the pan. Fry each patty for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy. Remove and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
  5. Serve: Serve hot with lemon wedges, tartar sauce, or a side of your choice.
