Directions
- Prepare the Hamburger Steaks: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped onion, bread crumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.
- Form Patties: Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into a patty about 1/2 inch thick.
- Sear the Patties: Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
- Make the Gravy: In the same skillet, add the beef broth and bring it to a simmer, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch and water to form a slurry. Gradually stir the slurry into the broth, continuing to simmer until the gravy thickens.
- Combine: Return the patties to the skillet, spooning the gravy over them. Let them simmer for a few minutes to heat through and absorb some of the gravy flavors.
- Serve: Transfer the patties and gravy to a serving dish and garnish with chopped parsley if desired. Enjoy!

Tips and Shortcuts
- Pre-made Patties: If you’re short on time, you can use pre-made hamburger patties. Just season them with the spices and follow the cooking directions.
- Gravy Variations: For a creamier gravy, you can add a splash of heavy cream or milk. Alternatively, sauté some mushrooms with the beef broth for a mushroom gravy.
- Extra Flavor: Adding a splash of soy sauce or a teaspoon of Dijon mustard to the gravy can enhance its flavor.
Storing Leftovers
Leftover hamburger steak and gravy can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place the leftovers in a covered dish and warm them in the microwave or on the stovetop until heated through.
Food and Drink Pairings
Hamburger Steak and Gravy pairs wonderfully with classic sides like mashed potatoes, steamed green beans, or a fresh garden salad. For a truly comforting meal, serve it with a side of buttery dinner rolls. As for drinks, a cold beer or a glass of red wine like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon complements the rich flavors of the dish perfectly.
