Instructions

  1. Brown the Beef
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain any excess fat and set the beef aside.
  2. Cook the Vegetables
In the same skillet, add the diced onion, bell pepper, and mushrooms (if using). Sauté for 4-5 minutes, until softened and fragrant.
  3. Combine Ingredients and Simmer
Return the cooked ground beef to the skillet with the vegetables. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, beef broth, and ketchup. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let cook for about 5 minutes. If the mixture is too thin, stir in the cornstarch to thicken.
  4. Add the Cheese
Reduce the heat to low, and sprinkle the shredded provolone cheese over the beef mixture. Stir gently until the cheese is melted and well combined.
  5. Serve on Rolls
Spoon the cheesy beef mixture onto the hoagie rolls or buns. Serve warm and enjoy!

Tips for the Best Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes

  1. Add Mushrooms: While optional, mushrooms add an extra layer of flavor that pairs wonderfully with the beef and cheese.
  2. Choose the Right Cheese: Provolone is traditional for Philly cheesesteaks, but mozzarella or even cheddar works well.
  3. Toast the Buns: Lightly toasting the rolls helps prevent them from getting soggy and adds a nice crunch.
