If you’re looking for a natural, effective way to keep mice and rats out of your home, try using peppermint oil! This strong-smelling essential oil is an excellent, chemical-free rodent deterrent. Rodents have extremely sensitive noses, and the intense scent of peppermint overwhelms them, making it an uninviting place to nest or forage for food.
How to Use Peppermint Oil to Repel Mice and Rats
- Dilute and Spray
Mix about 10–15 drops of peppermint oil with water in a spray bottle. Spray areas where you suspect rodents are entering, such as along baseboards, doorways, windowsills, and pantry areas. Refresh the spray every few days or when the scent starts to fade. - Cotton Ball Method
Soak cotton balls in undiluted peppermint oil and place them in areas you think mice might enter, like in cabinets, under sinks, or near cracks and holes. Replace every few days for the strongest effect. - Combine with Other Deterrents
For added protection, try using peppermint oil alongside other natural deterrents like vinegar or clove oil, both of which also have strong scents that rodents dislike.
