Directions for Making Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy
1. Prepare the Beef Patties
In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder. Mix gently until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat, which can make it tough.
2. Shape and Sear the Patties
Divide the beef mixture into 4-6 portions, depending on your preferred patty size, and shape each portion into a thick patty. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add a little oil or butter and sear the patties for 3-4 minutes per side, until they develop a nice brown crust. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
3. Make the Onion Gravy
In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they turn golden brown and caramelized, about 10 minutes. If they start to stick, add a splash of beef broth to deglaze the pan.
4. Add the Broth and Worcestershire Sauce
Pour in the beef broth and add the Worcestershire sauce, scraping up any brown bits from the bottom of the skillet for extra flavor. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
5. Thicken the Gravy
Mix the cornstarch with water to create a slurry, then pour it into the simmering gravy. Stir well, and let it cook for 2-3 minutes until the gravy thickens. Add salt and pepper to taste.
6. Return the Patties to the Skillet
Place the hamburger patties back in the skillet with the gravy, spooning some of the gravy over each patty. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let everything simmer for 10 minutes to ensure the patties are cooked through and full of flavor.
7. Serve
Serve the hamburger steaks hot with a generous ladle of onion gravy. Enjoy with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles for a complete comfort meal.
