Directions
- Divide the ground beef into four equal portions and shape each portion into a patty. Season both sides of the patties generously with salt and pepper.
- Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and add the vegetable oil.
- Add the burger patties to the skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add the butter and sliced onions. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are soft and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes.
- Meanwhile, preheat another skillet or griddle over medium heat and lightly butter one side of each slice of rye bread.
- Place two slices of bread, buttered side down, on the skillet. Top each slice with a slice of Swiss cheese, a cooked burger patty, and a generous spoonful of caramelized onions.
- Place the remaining slices of bread on top, buttered side facing up.
- Cook the sandwiches for 2-3 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
- Remove from the skillet and serve immediately, with your choice of optional toppings.

How to Store Leftovers
If you somehow have any leftovers (though it’s doubtful!), you can store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in a skillet over medium heat until warmed through before serving.
Food and Drink Pairings
Pair these indulgent Patty Melts with a cold beer or a classic milkshake for the ultimate diner experience. The creamy richness of the milkshake or the crispness of the beer perfectly complements the savory flavors of the sandwich, creating a match made in comfort food heaven.
