Ingredients:

  • 1 large head of cabbage
  • 1 pound ground beef (or substitute with ground turkey for a lighter option)
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes
  • 1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup beef or vegetable broth

Directions:

  1. Prepare the Cabbage Leaves:
    • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
    • Carefully remove the core from the cabbage head and place it in the boiling water.
    • Cook for 5-7 minutes, or until the outer leaves are tender and easily removable.
    • Remove the cabbage from the water and let it cool slightly. Peel off the leaves, trimming any thick veins if necessary.
  2. Prepare the Filling:
    • In a skillet, cook the ground beef (or turkey) over medium heat until browned.
    • Add the chopped onion and garlic, cooking until softened and fragrant.
    • Stir in the cooked rice, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and pepper. Cook for an additional 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  3. Assemble the Stuffed Cabbage:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
    • Spoon a portion of the filling onto each cabbage leaf, then fold the sides over the filling and roll up tightly.
    • Place the stuffed cabbage rolls seam-side down in a baking dish.
    • Pour the broth over the stuffed cabbage rolls, covering them evenly.
  4. Bake:
    • Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender and the filling is heated through.
  5. Serve and Enjoy:
    • Remove from the oven and let the stuffed cabbage rolls cool slightly before serving.
    • Garnish with fresh herbs if desired, and enjoy this comforting meal with your favorite sides.

How to Store Leftovers

If you happen to have any leftovers (though they tend to disappear quickly!), simply store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. You can also freeze the stuffed cabbage rolls for longer storage. Just be sure to thaw them in the refrigerator before reheating.

Food and Drink Pairings

Stuffed Cabbage pairs wonderfully with a variety of side dishes and beverages. Consider serving it with mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, or a crisp green salad for a well-rounded meal. For drinks, opt for a full-bodied red wine like Merlot or a refreshing glass of iced tea.
